Although dementia is a progressive condition, there are many different types and stages, alongside a range of therapies to enhance quality of life. Occupational Therapy takes a strengths-based, enabling approach. We focus on ongoing involvement in daily activities, which helps to slow decline while maintaining a sense of normality, autonomy, and identity.
Whether you are seeking support for yourself or a loved one, we can work together to:
Navigate a new diagnosis: Explore the condition and make early, proactive changes to build a supportive foundation for the future. This includes providing practical guidance for you and your family, alongside adaptations to your routines and environment – all designed to minimise confusion and support safe navigation around the home.
Maximise participation in essential routines: Implement strategies to help you or your loved one function as well as possible in daily self-care activities. By building on intact skills, we will adapt activities to provide the ‘just-right’ balance of support and challenge to maintain active engagement. This may involve breaking down complex tasks, implementing cognitive aids, and exploring sensory adjustments to allow for a sense of calm and focus.
Stay connected to passions and interests: Meaningful engagement isn't about completing a task perfectly; it's about the feeling it brings. When a pastime becomes too complex or overwhelming, I will focus on the smaller elements that can still be successfully enjoyed by you or your loved one.
I also offer the following recognised approaches to further support you or your loved one’s cognitive health and wellbeing:
